What is N95 Masks?
Type 95 respirator is one of the nine kinds of particulate matter masks certified by NIOSH. “N” means particles that are not suitable for oil (cooking fumes are oily particles, while droplets produced by people talking or coughing are not oily); “95” means that the filtration efficiency reaches 95% under the detection conditions specified in NIOSH standard. N95 is not a specific product name. As long as the products meet the N95 standard and pass NIOSH examination, they can be called “N95 masks”.
Among the nine standards formulated by NIOSH, N95 is the lowest standard for infection protection, which is cheap and easy to be adopted by medical institutions. N95 respirator is used for occupational respiratory protection, including some microbial particles (such as virus, bacteria, mold, anthrax, Mycobacterium, etc.).
The most important feature of mask N95 is that it can prevent droplet infection caused by body fluid or blood spatter. The size of the droplets ranges from 1 to 5 microns in diameter. Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA) stipulates that medical personnel exposed to tuberculosis must wear masks above N95 standard.
N95 mask is one of the nine standards formulated by NIOSH in 1995. “N” means “not resistant to oil”. “95” means that the particle concentration inside the mask is 95% lower than that outside the mask when exposed to the specified number of special test particles. 95% is not an average, but a minimum.
Other Levels of Mask with Niosh Approved
Other types of NIOSH approved anti particulate matter masks include n99, N100, R95, R99, R100, p95, p99 and P100, all of which can cover the protection range of N95. Among them, “R” refers to that it is suitable for oily or non oily particulates. If it is used for the protection of oily particles, its service time shall not exceed 8 hours; and “P” refers to that it is suitable for oily or non oily particles Oily particles, use time should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. “99” and “100” refer to the filtration efficiency level respectively.
It can be divided into “n”, “R”, “P” according to oil resistance, and “95”, “99” and “100” according to the capture rate. “R” stands for “resistant to oil”, “P” stands for “oil proof”, and “99” in capture rate is above 99%, and “100” is above 99.7%.
In addition, when N100, P100 and R100 masks are tested with 0.3 micron particles, the barrier efficiency must be above 99.7%. The filtration rate of n99, p99 and R99 is above 99%, while that of N95, p95 and R95 is above 95%.
N95 Masks Are Ideal Versus Coronavirus
Therefore, when N95 mask is tested with 0.3 μ M sodium chloride particles, the barrier rate must be more than 95%. When the wearer’s face is tight, air can enter and exit through the mask when it is close to the edge of the face. N95 certification number will be issued only if it meets this test. Generally speaking, the respirator which has passed the certification of the existing domestic standards can not reach the N95 standard.
During the outbreak of SARS in 2003, the World Health Organization (who) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States issued relevant preventive measures for the care of SARS patients.
